Social Enterprise Blog – 12th June 2017

The Brothers of Charity Services in Lancashire has various social enterprises for adults with learning disabilities; these services are designed to support people to develop skills with confidence in a supportive working environment whilst offering services into the local community.

The social enterprises carry out lots of great, fun activities for the people we support and the local communities to get involved with. Here you will be able to find out what each of the social enterprises have been up to this week.

The Walled Garden

It’s been a busy week for the team at The Walled Garden, cabbage, cauliflower and khol rabi were ready to be harvested, they gave most of these to Roccoco who used them in a tasty vegetable soup.

The Walled Garden is home to lots of mixed fruit and vegetable plots, bringing lots of fresh produce throughout the year. This gives the team lots of opportunity to become part of the supply chain for our other social enterprises such as Roccoco, seeing the end product is very rewarding for the team!

Here is some of the latest harvest of kohl rabi, cauliflower and cabbage.

Pets Corner in Astley Park, Chorley

This week, the team has been giving the bearded dragons’ home a spring clean. Juno took this as the perfect opportunity to enjoy the views of Astley Park around Pets Corner. It is important to keep the animal enclosures clean to ensure they are living in healthy environments.

There are two resident bearded dragons living at Pets Corner, Draco and Juno. The simple way to tell who is who, is that male bearded dragons have larger heads while females have thinner tails, this means Juno is on the left and Draco to the right of the picture below.

Roccoco

The team at Roccoco are always working hard to create tasty dishes to keep their customers coming back for more! Rebecca, has been making apple crumble for customers to enjoy this week. With help from the rest of the team, Rebecca measured out all of the ingredients into a baking tray and carefully placed it into the oven, where it baked and left a beautiful golden finish on top.

The apple crumble that Rebecca made was so tasty; it has been sold as Roccoco’s weekly special. Rebecca is very proud showing off her apple crumble, and we’re sure the customers will enjoy it very much this week!

Hands on Gardening

This week the Hands on Gardening team completed another fantastic fencing job. To make it easier, a breaker was hired to help remove the original concrete boards and posts. This was a perfect opportunity for the team to learn how to use a new piece of machinery in a safe and effective manner.  We’re sure you will agree that the finished fence looks great!

The team from Hands on Gardening are always learning new skills in both garden maintenance and community engagement, they love new challenges and working together to complete the job.

Hands on Recycling

The Hands on Recycling team love seeing what can happen to the items that they collect for recycling. Whilst most recycled cardboard is turned into new boxes and packaging at recycling plants, some people like to get creative.

Check out these wonderful one of a kind cardboard furnishings crafted out of recycled packaging materials and catalogs by David Stark Design and Production in New York, including these cacti made out of layered cardboard. It is impressive that pieces of art like this can created from the everyday items that we recycle!
